Please join us in saying THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to this year's candidates for stepping up to run, and thank you to all of our volunteer leaders!

Meet the 2023 ExComm Elected Leaders

Position: Member-at-Large

Candidate: Carolina Carvajal

I have been serving BSLA in many ways since I moved to Boston in 2011. There are many incredible ways to serve our community of Landscape Architects. I also find it’s a very reciprocal relationship. I have met wonderful people who have turned out to be my dear friends and colleagues now. I have volunteered in the BSLA as an event helper and planner, Emerging Professionals event volunteer, and EP Committee Co-chair, I also served as a Member-at-Large (2019-2022) and currently serve as a DEI Committee Co-Chair. Therefore, my wonderful experience has been a well-rounded one within the chapter.

My interest in serving once again as a Member at Large comes from this previous experience. In my previous experience we focused on the emerging professionals and establishing a solid group that could have guidance and direction for when new chairs and volunteers join.

Also, I am interested in serving again as Member at Large because I feel that I can bring more awareness and guide our community in the different Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion items that we want to tackle and highlight as a chapter. As a Co-chair for the DEI committee and the mentorship awareness focus that we currently have, I feel that we can bridge the community of the chapter and provide this mentor services. I’m excited to see our community grow and help each other’s committees as many of our efforts can interlace. Lastly, I’m very proud to be a member of the BSLA community and look forward to serving as a Member-at-Large.

Candidate (running unopposed): Tom Ryan

Position: Member-at-Large

Candidate: Haipeng Zhu

I am Haipeng Zhu, a registered landscape architect, currently working at Payette. I joined the BSLA chapter when I graduated from RISD in 2013, and have actively participated in BSLA things since then, including EP events, site tours, office visits, workshops, as well as hosting a licensure workshop for emerging professionals. Now reaching the 10 year milestone of practice, I wanted to return my experiences and knowledge back to the community, which is why I am running for Member-at-Large.

If elected, I would like to develop three things for our chapter:

  • A “Better practice” group: Good landscape practice doesn’t only mean good design. It also includes financial management, human resource management, peer management, publicity promotion, writing, legal documents, etc. It is common that besides design, some don’t know or don’t have the resources to continue developing their career in other aspects of practice. I would use this group as a platform to invite different firms to give workshops about what they have done well beyond design and share experiences which are essential to the success of their practice.

  • An “Immigrant connections” group: as an immigrant myself, I have been on this long journey. A large number of students as well as practitioners in our chapter are from other countries. The group I am thinking to form will be a channel connecting them for sharing knowledge, listening to each other’s concerns and experiences, and supporting each other when facing challenges as immigrants.

  • Last but not least, I would also help lead a licensure group. In addition to exam preparation, I’d like to help us advocate to the public the value and importance of registered landscape architects to our living environments.

Thank you for your time on my letter of nomination.

Position: Trustee

The BSLA has always been a leader within ASLA and we have always set the standard for what chapters should be doing for their members and for their community. As Trustee, I would bring our successes to other chapters and also bring their successes back to us. As the trustees are the actual governing board of the Society, I would do my best to make our points of view heard at a national level and to communicate what is happing at a national level back to us in the chapter.

I have been involved with BSLA since I moved to the Boston area in 1977. Over that time, I have served as Chapter president (which included a successful defense of a sunset law that would have removed our licensing), coordinator for the UNE (predecessor to the LARE) review course for a decade, chair and member of the Awards Committee, and, recently, chair of the Fellows Nomination Committee. I convened a BSLA/CSI committee to review master specs for unit concrete block walls, was active in peer review of the design pf the Central Artery and public outreach to the affected neighborhoods, and served as the BSLA representative on joint committees with the BSA to organize charrettes to explore design options for Fort Devens and the Boston waterfront.

With ASLA nationally, I have served as the president of the Chapter President’s Council, as a member of Landscape Architecture Magazine’s board, as a member of the committee that reviews MasterSpec Landscape sections, and on the Annual Meeting planning committee reviewing educational session proposals. I have served on several accreditation teams for LAAB, as chair of a Housing subcommittee and ASLA representative at a Site Plan Development Conference, and have been a presenter at ASLA Annual Meetings.

As a practicing landscape architect, I have been the President of Ryan Associates in Waltham, MA for the last 20+ years. Previous to that, I worked at Burck – Ryan (in partnership with Skip Burck), as well as Sasaki, SWA (when they had a Boston office), and Carol Johnson’s.

Position: President-Elect

Candidate (running unopposed): Michelle Crowley

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Michelle Crowley but I go by “Mich” (rhymes with “quiche”). I have been a member of BSLA for the past 20 years and would consider it an honor to represent you as the next president of BSLA. I am a partner and founder at Crowley Cottrell, LLC. We are a Boston based firm that strives to bring clarity to complex sites to create beautiful, approachable landscapes for living.

Before studying Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, I worked in landscape construction in my home state of New Mexico. I believe that experience gave me a practical perspective to the work I have done at various firms in Boston over the last two decades (some of which have won ASLA and BSLA awards). My work spans from private residences to colleges and Universities; and on each project I feel that my down to earth approach helps facilitate the collaborative efforts of clients, designers, allied professionals and contractors.

As a partner managing a dozen staff members and growing the firm since 2011, I have always been interested in employee engagement and how to create a firm culture that encourages equity and mentorship. Through the pandemic I was, and am still, involved with the BSLA’s monthly firm leader roundtables. I believe I have been appreciated for my forthright contributions, which have led to honest and open conversations with mutual benefits for participating firms.

I feel strongly that with nurturing leadership BSLA can help Boston area firms become a truly collaborative network - with everyone from interns to firm leaders, designers to contractors, sharing knowledge and moving the field forward. If elected the next president of BSLA, I hope to support not only programs that help us share knowledge about design and sustainability, but about the future of work and collaboration in a post-COVID era.For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Michelle Crowley but I go by “Mich” (rhymes with “quiche”). A note about BSLA chapter elections:

BSLA thrives thanks to the generosity, energy, and actions of dozens of volunteers: committee chairs and co-chairs, section leaders, student leaders, and all of you who participate as speakers, donors, members, authors, awards jurors, event attendees, and in many, many other ways, big and small. Thank you.

BSLA is governed by our "ExComm," or Executive Committee. These ExComm positions are defined by our bylaws and elected in an annual process, similar to every other ASLA chapter across the country.

As we enter this year's election cycle, BSLA is pleased to remind you that last year, our Executive Committee amended our chapter bylaws so that EVERY member of our chapter now has a vote in our annual elections.

That is, in our chapter -- Massachusetts and Maine -- student members and affiliate members are allowed to vote alongside associate and regular full members. "A member is a member is a member." (Historically, only full and associate members were allowed to vote.)
