This plants-focused tour, led by ecological landscape designer Marie Chieppo, will explore two different meadow projects a mile apart – one meadow is 6 months old, and one is 1.5 years old.

The purpose behind both projects was to restore ecological functionality while creating a beautiful aesthetic. Even though the properties are located less than one mile from each other, the conditions varied greatly. One property is on a wetland with sandy soil that has had a tremendous amount of disturbance through the years. The other, is a beachfront property with dry sandy soil and minimal disturbance that has its own set of environmental stressors. Thorough site analyses were conducted to formulate appropriate plant communities.

We planted species indigenous to the area to provide high quality habitat for threatened pollinating insects and birds. Ruderal and long-living plants were used to enhance biodiversity and reduce weed pressure. We intentionally included varied levels of competition and root morphologies to create relative ecological stability. A great deal of attention was given to sourcing eco-typical plant material. We will share our successes and challenges with each.

Addresses of these sites will be provided with registration.

This tour will be led by
