Middle School City Build

A multi-day workshop in spatial design

City Build is a FREE hands-on workshop for students in grades 6–8 that introduces architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning through drawing, maps, and model-making.

Students can join for a half day, a full day, or multiple days; over the course of the week, participants will collaborate to design and “build” a new city using cardboard and recycled materials.

Inspired by the pre-college Spatial Design summer program at the University of Southern Maine—founded by local artist and educator Addy Smith-Reiman and architect Gretchen Rabinikin (currently Executive Director of BSLA)—as well as Boston’s KidsBuild program, the workshop brings together creative exploration and real-world design thinking. Working with a team of local design professionals, students will learn about how cities are planned while developing their own visions for Lewiston.
