We will explore the challenges and delight of designing and installing a residential urban farm that encourages community engagement while optimizing available space.
Collaboration with the homeowner, structural engineers, contractors, designers, and neighbors was key to achieving space efficiency and maximizing the functional output of the underutilized black rubber roof. The project’s modern cistern, buried underground for rainwater harvesting, provided an effective stormwater management solution. Additionally, a walkable elevated deck connected the homeowner's second-story kitchen directly to the rooftop garden, enhancing accessibility.
The shared benefits extended to all nearby residents, improving views, air quality, and creating a peaceful green retreat in the urban setting. The garden also serves as a community hub, offering educational and research opportunities on sustainable urban farming. Careful planning and open communication with neighbors minimized disruption during construction, respecting daily routines. By addressing both the short-term construction impact and long-term beauty, the project balanced challenges with lasting rewards for the community.
