Senior Restoration Designer (SRD)

Your Mission:

The Senior Restoration Designer (SRD) will work closely and collaboratively with the design team to design ecological restoration projects that achieve client goals, meet regulatory requirements, and ecologically uplift the site. The primary responsibilities will be managing and mentoring design staff in the development of the design strategies and the creation of documents required to successfully permit projects with local and state regulatory agencies. In collaboration with the project team, the SRD presents technical aspects, ecological benefits and regulatory compliance of projects at local Conservation Commission public hearings. The SRD works closely with Project Managers during all phases of a project, particularly during the design and permitting stage and as the project transitions into construction. This position must apply a high level of technical expertise to ensure that the Design Department consistently produces a high quality of work in line with WED design standards.

Outcomes you will deliver:

  • Provide direction and mentorship to design staff in the preparation of Land Management Plans, Restoration Plans, and related documentation for design development, permit applications, and construction purposes.

  • Work with WED staff and project team partners to set project objectives and schedule, and to track submittal deadlines for permitting applications of projects.

  • Create high quality design deliverables, within the parameters of the design/permitting contract to successfully achieve client goals and permit projects with local and state regulatory agencies.

  • In collaboration with the project team, present technical aspects, ecological benefits, and regulatory compliance at local Conservation Commission public hearings.

  • Work closely with WED Project Managers during all phases of a project, particularly during the design and permitting stage and as the project transitions into construction.

  • Maintain communication with clients and other consultants (engineers, landscape architects, etc.) during the design and permitting stages of a project.

  • Supervise, delegate work to, and evaluate the performance of Design staff

  • Support sales and client communication as necessary.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field with at least 3-5 years of relevant design experience in ecological restoration, landscape design, or related field

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Rhino 3ds, Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with ArcGIS & GPS

  • Team player with at least one-year experience in management

  • Highly organized and detail oriented with well-developed time management skills

  • Effective verbal & written communication skills

  • Ability to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours

Restoration Designer (RD)

The Restoration Designer (RD) produces documentation for land management programs and restoration projects. The RD ensures that all documentation is conducted within the parameters of the work orders to meet client needs and regulatory requirements, and is consistent with WED’s mission and guiding principles. The RD assists with design guidance and delegation of design deliverables to junior design staff, including the ARD and Design Intern.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Working under the supervision of the Director of Design, coordinate with WED team to ensure projects are designed and implemented to achieve client goals, meet regulatory requirements, and maintain consistency with WED’s mission statement and guiding principles.

  • Conduct research, complete thorough and detailed site analysis evaluations, perform associated fieldwork and document field investigations in written, verbal and graphic form.

  • Accurately draft detailed plans, design documents and drawings in written and graphic form, including Land Management Plans, Restoration Plans, site programming diagrams, illustrative sketches, diagrams, sections, as well as construction sections and details

  • Research project background and requirements (gather and analyze GIS data, historic land use patterns, deed and regulatory research, and supporting scientific documentation) as needed

  • Assist Director of Design with permitting strategy

  • Lead Design team with Grant submissions, RFP/RFQ responses, and Sales design materials

  • Establish and maintain design department connections, processes, and workflows with Hanover satellite office

  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and proposals

  • Share responsibility for support and mentorship of junior design staff

  • Communicate with clients, co-workers, and team partners

  • Attend local conservation commission or other regulatory meetings with potential of presenting

  • Keep all project files current and organized under WED filing system

  • Thoroughly and efficiently gather customer and project information and regularly update the CRM system as appropriate.

  • Provide administrative/CRM support as needed.

  • Develop and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with regulatory review agency representatives, including completing formal notifications to regulatory agencies as needed.

  • Maintain regular project documentation including within Sage CRM program and in all incident reports and safety logs, as needed.

  • Perform other duties or tasks as needed under the direction of the Director of Design.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field preferred coupled with 1+ year of relevant design experience in ecological restoration, landscape design or related field, or Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning or related field coupled with 3+ years of relevant design experience in ecological restoration, landscape design or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience with Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, Regulations, and Policies as well as local wetland protection Bylaws and Regulation and local Conservation Commission project review procedures.

  • Familiarity with landscape construction, ecological restoration, and bioengineering construction.

  • Knowledge of Cape Cod native plant communities.

  • Knowledge of invasive plant species and control/management techniques.

  • Microsoft Office proficiency.

  • Required Licenses:

    • Valid Driver’s License

    • MA Pesticide Applicator License (to be acquired within 90 days of hire)

  • Ability to review and comprehend construction plans and details.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to provide leadership and work respectfully as a team with co-workers.

We are seeking a Principal Landscape Architect to serve as a business developer and co-team leader for our Boston-based Landscape Architecture Team. The Principal Landscape Architect will lead design vision and strategy for large, complex, multi-disciplinary projects while driving business development and client engagement. This role emphasizes design leadership, guiding concept development, ensuring design integrity through all phases, and mentoring team members, alongside responsibilities for project management, construction documentation, and administration. The successful candidate will work within Stantec’s Community Development practice, and collaborate with internal Architectural, Environmental, and Engineering disciplines.

As a Principal Landscape Architect, you will work in a team environment on a wide range of projects and scales such as planning and design of parks and recreation facilities; bicycle, pedestrian, and multiuse trails; sports and athletic facilities; healthcare, urban infill, corporate, and educational campuses; and master planned communities including multi-family residential, senior housing, mixed-use and transit-oriented developments. You will lead and assist with assignments across disciplines, manage budgets, provide urban and landscape architecture design experience, and interact with existing and prospective clients with exemplary communication skills and a strategic and design-oriented perspective.

Business development responsibilities will include: market research and strategy, client relationship management, proposal development, branding and marketing, identifying and cultivating strategic partnerships, monitoring business development performance indicators including win rates and revenue growth, and fostering a culture of internal collaboration.

You will work within a local and virtual team setting, with weekly presence at our Boston office expected. Local travel will be required for attending client or public meetings, scoping new assignments, and participating in internal meetings.

Your Key Responsibilities

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Licensed Landscape Architect

  • Experience with public and private sectors in the Northeast

  • Demonstrated responsibility, maturity, and commitment to a team-driven environment, including an ability to communicate effectively, lead teams, develop strong internal relationships, and foster a culture of collaboration

  • Expertise in resilient and sustainable designs

  • Desire and ability to lead and contribute on multiple levels within the design process

  • Excellent creative and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to integrate sustainability in all aspects of planning and design

  • Well-versed in local, regional, and national trends in planning, landscape architecture and urban design.

  • Ability to successfully scope and deliver multi-disciplinary projects

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly and confidently

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office; Civil3D and LandFX experience preferred

  • High-level understanding and working knowledge of GIS, Sketch-Up, Rhino or similar platforms at a supervisory level of effectiveness

  • Excellent time management skills

  • Thorough understanding of task assignments and schedules, budgeting, and efficient use of time and resources

  • Detailed knowledge of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions, and how they apply to design projects

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building and maintaining client relationships; -Proven ability to translate those relationships into winning new work opportunities

  • Experience conducting presentations and project interviews

  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited Landscape Architecture program. Minimum 15 years of experience preferred.

Salary Range: $120,400 - $180,500

• Prepare schematic landscape design and planting plans, and tree preservation plans

• Complete site visits and tree assessments (local plant knowledge is an asset)

• Assist with the preparation of construction documents, details and specifications

• Attend project meetings with senior staff

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, or equivalent

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant design experience

• Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Suite.

• Good organizational skills to manage priorities and deadlines
