Job Description

The Building and Construction Technology Program (in the Department of Environmental Conservation) and the Department of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time lecturer position to be the director and primary instructor for the UMass DesignBuild program. The successful candidate will provide the core organizational, administrative, and instructional role in the UMass DesignBuild program, which is a service-learning effort that allows students from multiple disciplines to construct a small house or other project each year as an academic exercise and then provide that structure to a local community partner and/or the University for their affordable housing efforts. It is a co-operative effort by the Building and Construction Technology program in the Department of Environmental Conservation, the Department of Architecture, and the Five Colleges Architectural Studies program.

Successful candidates will have a strong interest in design-build pedagogy and experience in both architectural design and full-scale construction.

This position is a calendar year Lecturer (100% appointment, 12 months), joint hire between the Department of Environmental Conservation (ECO) as primary department and the Department of Architecture as secondary.

The initial appointment will be for two years but is renewable based on performance and program need. The successful candidate will be a core faculty member of the Building and Construction Technology (BCT) Program in the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Architecture, and will interface with other academic groups at UMass and industry throughout the region. The ECO and Architecture departments and UMass Amherst place special emphasis on faculty-student interactions and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. We value the retention of new faculty, and the successful candidate will be provided with a departmental mentoring committee and have access to extensive university programs and mutual mentoring opportunities through the Colleges of Natural Sciences and Humanities and Fine Arts and the University’s Office of Faculty Development.

The presumed start date is September 1, 2026.

Essential Functions:

Teaching Duties:

  • Spring: Teaching a 6 credit undergraduate and graduate level DesignBuild design studio that leads to the construction documents for the upcoming project.

  • Summer: Instructor for two 6 credit (each) DesignBuild build courses during which the structure will be built.

  • Fall: Teaching the BCT 313 course (3 cr.) on light-frame, residential construction. This may coincide with instructional duties for the completion of the design/build project.

Service Duties:

Construction Management Duties

  • Perform all necessary tasks required for the successful construction of the proposed design-build project as specified in the UMass DesignBuild Design Studio, including but not limited to the following:

  • Prepare UMass DesignBuild site in preparation for student arrival for the start of the Build, i.e., tools, materials, construction equipment, safety equipment, etc.

  • Procure all materials and equipment necessary for the build.

  • Instruct students in all aspects of construction procedures including both tool and job site safety.

  • Communicate and coordinate as necessary with assorted code officials, municipal authorities, specialty contractors, and materials suppliers.

  • Complete construction as needed following the conclusion of the summer build courses, and ensure delivery to community partner.

Program Management Duties

  • Primary management of the UMass Design Build program including, but not limited to the following tasks:

  • Solicitiation and procurement of projects for the DesignBuild program.

  • Negotiations and agreements with community partners, the University, and/or other potential collaborators for DesignBuild projects.

The majority the firm’s distinctive residential work occurs on the state’s rugged coast and islands as well as within the mountains and alongside the lakes of the state’s interior.

Project Manager applicants should have a minimum of four years proven project management experience, with excellent communication and time management skills. They are expected to contribute to all phases of projects, from their inception through to their completion. This includes proposal writing, budgeting, project coordination, planning, analysis, conceptual design, schematic design, permitting, design development, bidding administration, public speaking, report writing, and permitting, as well as construction documentation and administration. Applicant should have interest in a very hands-on design process including playing an active role with clients, other team members, and contractors.

A proven track record of managing, coordinating, and collaborating with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal team members is a high priority for this position. As well, applicants should have experience with, and enjoy, a fast-paced work environment involving day-to-day management of multiple projects across a wide spectrum of types, sizes, and tasks. Experience with complex residential projects is strongly preferred.

We have a healthy mix of project types including municipal, mixed-use, multi-family, religious, retail, life science, and custom residential design. Roles and Responsibilities

The Boston Transportation and Public Works Departments are seeking a Director of Green Infrastructure to lead the City's green infrastructure programs, policies, and designs.

Under the direction of the Chief of Streets or their designee, the Director of Green Infrastructure will collaborate across City Departments, particularly Environment, Energy, and Open Space Cabinet, and BWSC to lead the City’s efforts to plan, build, and maintain green infrastructure as part of the Mayor’s Green New Deal for Boston. The Director of Green Infrastructure will be responsible for defining the process and policy for green infrastructure to better incorporate it into the City of Boston’s project plans, regulations, and operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop policy frameworks for green infrastructure in City-led projects.

  • Collaborate with Environment, Energy, and Open Space to develop and implement Green Infrastructure policies, programs, and projects.

  • Educate the City of Boston staff about Green Infrastructure and climate resilience across a wide variety of departments, such as BPS, Boston Planning, and others.

  • Provides guidance to enhance the “Green Infrastructure Job Pipeline,” in collaboration with the Worker Empowerment Cabinet and other relevant City departments.

  • Represents the OGI in City projects, programs, and initiatives (e.g. Climate-Ready Workforce).

  • Revises existing regulations and develops new regulations and guidelines for green infrastructure implementation in private development projects.

  • Work with appropriate engineering and planning teams to update standard details and design guidelines to incorporate current green infrastructure best practice, including:

    • Establish a nomenclature for city of Boston Green Infrastructure

    • Draft city of Boston policies to increase Green Infrastructure implementation

  • Relaunch the City’s Green Infrastructure Working Group to serve in both an advisory role and to increase knowledge-sharing; manage the group to develop Citywide green infrastructure plan.

  • Oversee the creation of an asset database containing existing and future City of Boston green infrastructure.

  • Implement a Green Infrastructure maintenance program for existing and future Green Infrastructure, both for in-house activities and contracts.

  • Identify potential funding sources for Green Infrastructure construction, maintenance, and monitoring.

  • Collaborate with BWSC on stormwater policies and fees, and liaise with BWSC around implementation, and provide guidance to City leadership on stormwater policies.

  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of environmental planning, environmental science and/or engineering experience, of which at least three years of experience must have been in green infrastructure. A bachelor’s degree or higher with a major in environmental science, civil engineering, landscape architecture, or environmental engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two (2) years of the required experience. Education toward a degree will be pro-rated on the basis of degree requirements completed.

  • NGICP certification strongly preferred.

  • Background in policy and technical/engineering highly preferred.

  • Ability to interpret and make suggestions on drafting policy, regulations, and legislation.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage fast-paced complex work environments and to model a respectful and professional approach to work.
